Meet the Characters

Joel

Joel, a rambunctious, carefree eight-year-old who loves to run and play with Bramble, his pet lamb. The son of a dutiful shepherd, he’s apprehensive when necessity requires his assistance in the fields. Joel maintains a special relationship with his grandfather. For his kid sister, Sarah, he’s a source of constant amusement.

Bramble

Bramble is Joel's pet lamb and follows Joel along his journey of becoming a shepherd.

Sarah

Sarah, a mischievous prankster is the classic tomboy. As Joel’s sister, she’s outspoken and precocious. Bound to a female role, the bold six-year old yearns to take on the challenges and excitement of tending the family flock.

Benjamin

Benjamin, Joel and Sarah’s father, is a stout and sturdy shepherd. A man of hard work and independence, Benjamin approaches life with measured skepticism. Intent on raising his son to be tough and self-sufficient, Benjamin’s spiritual transformation on this special night dramatically affects his entire family.

Martha

Martha, Joel and Sarah’s mother, is nurturing, protective and the family mediator. Traditional in dress and family position, she wields an independent spirit uncharacteristic of the time.

Grandfather

Grandfather, a patriarch of the family, thoughtful, wise and caring is eager to teach young Joel the skills and responsibilities of shepherding. His gift to Joel is a staff, the traditional family symbol representing the passage into manhood.
